Humpback Whale Birth Observed

By Matt Lind, August 2014

In the News this week, the locals of Mudjimba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast were treated to the unreal sight of a humpback whale giving birth not far off the coast.
Southern ocean humpbacks spend their winters feeding in Antartica before migrating north to give birth in the tropics so this mother having her calf off the Ozzie coast is the cetacean equivalent of giving birth in the taxi on the way to hospital.  Despite not eating in the warmer waters, female humpacks produce up to 200 litres of milk a day to feed their growing young.
